Brief

Theme:

Infomercial

Idea:

To create a parody of the 1930’s – 1960’s infomercial/public information films. The subject of the film is how to be a model 21st century British citizen. It will explore current affairs, popular culture, social activity, modern habits and other ‘interesting’ traits you might associate Britain with. The film will not ...look to acknowledge the faults and failings of our ways, but rather champion them, thus promoting a sort of caricature or stereotypical image of the country. As with most infomercials we will also have a character who plays the role of a demonstrator, showing us the ‘benefits’ of behaving like a typical British citizen.

To help further advance the sarcastic and patronising tone will be one or two narrators providing material that will guide the general, scene to scene direction of the film. So in terms of the story development the voice over work will play an important role from beginning, middle and end as it creates an orderly narrative structure.  The voices themselves will be based on the early 20th centaury British accent and dialect, providing an upbeat and dignified mood no matter what the on screen situation may be.

Because this idea is heavily influenced by the infomercials and public information films from the 30’s through to the 60’s I feel it is appropriate to head towards an animation style/process that reflects that particular era of moving image. Thus the intention is to look at the possibility of using 2D hand drawn limited animation while also considering the potential of cut out animation. There are unique qualities and characteristics within these methods as they can convey a sense of innocence, charm, simplicity and accessibility.  Of course the door will always be open for experimentation through digitally manipulative techniques, in fact it should be encouraged as it could lead to many short cuts as well as creative possibilities. So Graphics tablets, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and other digital process may prove to be very useful.
